Regular Meeting of the Guild, Followed by the Guild Lunch

Fly-tying Meeting starts at 10:00 am…Lunch is from 12:00 to 3:00

We’ll be having our regularly scheduled, in-person tying meeting in the Wulff Gallery of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, 1031 Old Route 17, Livingston Manor, New York. Bring your vise and materials if you’d like to tie. The presentation and discussion theme will center around the significance of color change in tying materials when they become wet. After the tying, we’ll have a lunch of sandwiches, side salads, soft drinks, and dessert. The lunch is free to all guild members and their families. The lunch will replace the picnic that had to be cancelled due to weather conditions. Lunch will be indoors, in the Wulff Gallery, so there will be no weather worries, just a good time. So come to the meeting, or come to lunch, or come to both. Let’s be there!

As always, you can show up and tie anything that you want, but terrestrials are the theme if you’d like to follow it, and we all know that ants, beetles, crickets, etc. are very effective flies to use in the summer. There will be coffee, snacks, and great conversation as there is at every meeting of the guild. If you can’t make it in person, but would like to attend virtually, Zoom links will be emailed to all members of the guild a few days before the start of the meeting.

Come join us in the Wulff Gallery of the fly fishing museum as we all do what the guild does best—tie flies! We’ll be kicking off the start of the summer tying that has been put together by guild vice president, John Apgar. This is a list of suggested flies to tie over the summer, and all of the flies on the list have deep roots in the Catskills. You can see the complete summer tying list by clicking on the summer tying list right here:

                                                                                                   Summer Tying List

Just bring your vise and the materials for the flies that you want to tie (there will be plenty of people who will share, if you need anything), and join in a late-morning session of tying that doesn’t interfere with the early morning or evening part of the fishing day. Coffee and snacks will be there for everyone, and there is sure to be good fishing and tying conversation as always.

The meeting will also be available on Zoom for those who can’t be here in person. Links were sent to all members, and will be sent again in the email reminder a day before the meeting.

                                                                                                     So let’s get tying!!!

For the next in-person meeting of the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild, we are very excited to feature guild member and excellent Catskill-fly tyer—Seth Cavarretta.

Seth will be demonstrating three flies: an Art Flick March Brown, a  Larry Solomon MB emerger/floating nymph, and a spinner for the March Brown. The timing of Seth’s presentation is excellent, as those are all very useful flies that should be appearing on our waters through late May.

The meeting will also be sent out via zoom for members who can not be there in person. Members will find a Zoom link and the materials lists for the patterns being tied in their email during the upcoming week.

April 15, 2023: In-Person Meeting of the Guild!

The guild will be meeting in person at 10:00 am in the Wulff Gallery on the grounds of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum. The museum’s address is 1031 Old Route 17, Livingston Manor, New York. This is our first in-person meeting of 2023. Stop by with your vise and tying tools, have a cup of coffee and snacks, and tie along. The tying focus of the meeting and presentation will be Hendrickson wet patterns, but as always—tie whatever you want to tie. The meeting will be until Noon, giving everyone the warmer and more productive part of the day to fish the local waters. We’re looking forward to seeing our members face to face and to share tying ideas for the upcoming season. We’ll have the meeting on Zoom for those who choose to attend virtually. For photos of Hendrickson wets, recipes, and the Zoom link, please click here(Corrected date) Patterns for April 15 Meeting

Note: We emailed a notice to our members that had the correct date of April 15 in the notice, but incorrectly had Oct 15 in the patterns for April 15. That’s why it says (corrected date) on the link.

April 6, 2023: Come join the guild for Winter Fly Tying, this Thursday night at 7:00 pm. We’ll be starting with one of the most iconic Catskill-style flies of all time: the Hendrickson!

Our winter fly tying continues this Thursday, March 30, at 7:00 pm. Zoom links are mailed directly to members before the event. We want to thank our members for the very enjoyable evening last week when we tied Olives. The fly to get things started for our upcoming session will be a real fish-getter: the Atherton Number Five. For more information, the recipe, and a photo of this very effective fly, please click here:

Winter Tying March 30, Atherton Number Five

Winter Tying continues this Thursday night, March 23, at 7:00 pm. Interest was expressed at the last session to tie Olives—a broad category of flies—so we are asking you to tie, and perhaps share, your favorite pattern(s) for Olives. This will likely be a very interesting evening of tying and discussing flies. For some information, history, patterns, and photos regarding Olives, we have a link to several pages of information that we sent out before an in-person meeting on the same topic in September 2021. You can access that by clicking here: March 23 Olives

March 16, 2023: The guild’s Winter Fly Tying nights continue this Thursday at 7:00 pm. Please join us as we start the evening with a fly that has been around for more than 100 years and was popularized by George LaBranch: The Pink Lady. We’ll be tying the dry-fly version of the pattern. For more info regarding the fly, please click here: March 16 Pink Lady

March 9, 2023: Come join the guild for Winter Tying at 7:00 pm. We’ll be tying the Bradley Special to get things started. For information about the fly, including photos and the recipe, click here: Winter Tying for March 9

We’re looking forward to seeing you this Thursday night!

February 16, 2023, starting at 7:00 pm

Winter Fly Tying:

The fly to get things kicked off this week will be Walt’s Riffle Dun, a style of fly originated by legendary Catskill fly tyer Walt Dette. This is style of fly, rather than a specific hatch-matching pattern. Click here for the materials list and more photos of Riffle Duns: Winter fly tying Feb 16

Winter Fly Tying Continues!

We’ll be continuing our winter fly-tying nights with a virtual session at 7:00 pm on February 9. Look for Zoom links in your email a few days before the start of the meeting. The fly to get us started was suggested by Tom Mason, and it will be Walt Dette’s Riffle Dun. This one shouldn’t be missed!

These informal tying sessions have been quite a hit, and we had more than twenty members participating in  the February 2 meeting. Here’s an interesting variation of a Comparadun from that meeting, tied by John Apgar. It uses a thread body suggested by Tom Mason and a mixed wing of deer hair and CDC as suggested by Rich Turner. Quite the tasty-looking fly!

Winter Fly-Tying Night

Our informal winter fly tying keeps rolling along! We’ve been having these sessions with a planned fly to start things off, and then everyone either ties more of the same, does variations of the pattern, or ties whatever they need for the upcoming season. We started with Catskill-style March Brown dry flies on January 19, and for February 2nd, we’re planning to start with Hendrickson Comparaduns. Links will be arriving to guild members by email as the date approaches. If you know someone who is not a guild member, but who has interest, feel free to share your link. So far, the tying has been relaxed and productive, and the conversations have been great, so come on and join us!

Winter Fly-tying Night

The informal winter tying continues. We had a glitch in last week’s Zoom link, so the topic of soft-hackles will be repeated with the March Brown Soft-Hackle being the first fly to tackle. Zoom links and suggested materials were sent to all guild members on January 8. Check your email for the announcement and the link, then come join us for the meeting this Thursday night.

See you there!

Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 7:00 pm

Winter Fly-tying Night:

The guild will be having the second meeting in a series of informal virtual fly-tying nights. John Apgar is organizing the tying meetings, and he presented a Soft-hackle Hendrickson for the group during the last session on December 22. We had a very pleasant and relaxed night of tying, and even had an impromptu showing of a short film of Edward Hewitt fishing that was provided by Pete Leitner. The tyers from that night agreed to meet again on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 7:00 pm. The theme will be soft-hackle flies, and anyone can bring a pattern for the group to tie. These sessions are planned to be ongoing throughout the winter. Zoom links will be arriving by email to all guild members a few days before the scheduled date.

Come join us!

Please come with the flies that worked well for you, and we’ll have a bit of show and tell to learn from each other. As always, bring your tying equipment for some open tying, and learning how to tie each others’ flies.    You can find photos and the pattern for one of my most successful flies in the Emerger for the upcoming meeting. Monthly Meeting of the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild

Come and join the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild on Saturday, September 17, at 1:00 pm for our monthly meeting. As usual, we will be meeting at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor, NY, but instead of being indoors in the Wulff Gallery, we will have a fresh-air meeting under the museum’s pavilion. The pavilion is easy to find: just turn right after you cross the bridge for the museum and drive to the end of the grassy field. The event is rain or shine, as the pavilion provides plenty of cover.    The topic of the meeting is spinners. Click on the following link for some details regarding spinners:

Guild Fly Tying Rendezvous
Date: May 21, 2022

The Fly Tying Rendezvous sponsored by the Guild will be held at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor, New York, on May 21, 2022, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Because space at the Rendezvous is limited, I’m asking all members who want to attend and tie to let us know by sending an email to catskillflytyersguild@gmail.com so a spot will be reserved for you. The theme for this year’s Rendezvous will be “Modern Catskill Flies.” This does not preclude attending members from tying traditional and classic patterns. One of our goals is to preserve tying history, but we also recognize that fly tying is always evolving with the advent of new materials. Consider how remarkable it will be to have Catskill flies being tied that represent their earliest origin to the present day. I’m requesting the members attending to state what you will be tying, so it can be duly noted in the program that will be prepared for the event.

I’m look forward to seeing everyone at the Rendezvous.

Joe Ceballos,
Preside
